Das dreibändige Mammutwerk BLACK & GREY TATTOO 1-3 umfasst mehr als tausend Seiten, wiegt 10 kg und ist damit eines der umfangreichsten Tattoowerke, die je veröffentlicht wurden – wenn nicht das umfangreichste überhaupt! Die drei großformatigen Bände sind in einer prächtigen, soliden Hardcover-Box zusammengefasst. BLACK & GREY TATTOO betrachtet eine monochrome Kunstform durch ein Kaleidoskop verschiedenster Interpretationen und handwerklicher Techniken, ausgeführt von Tattookünstlern aus aller Welt.
Das gewaltige Werk untersucht die Ursprünge und die Entwicklung des Black & Grey-Tattoostils – von seinen Anfängen in Gefängnissen und den Straßen von L.A. bis hin zu der Resonanz, die er heute auf den roten Teppichen von Hollywood, auf Heavy-Metal-Festivals und in privaten Studios von Budapest bis Peking findet. Black & Grey-Tätowierungen werden ausschließlich in monochromen Farbschattierungen ausgeführt, doch das Spektrum der Motive ist immens: Aztekenkrieger und wilde Harpyien sind auf diesen Seiten genauso zu sehen wie Familienporträts, Heiligenbilder und ewige Schreine für Prominente. Der rote Faden, der sie alle verbindet, ist der einfallsreiche Entwurf und die meisterhafte Ausführung.
BLACK & GREY TATTOO ist in drei Bände unterteilt: TRADITIONAL BLACK & GREY, DARK/HORROR und PHOTOREALISM. Zwar überschneiden sich die verschiedenen Stile und beeinflussen sich gegenseitig; dennoch wurde diese Aufteilung nicht nur vorgenommen, damit man diese Monster-Kollektion leichter heben kann. Vielmehr wollten wir demonstrieren, wie Tattoos mit ähnlichen Stilelementen durch herausragende Tattookünstler aus der ganzen Welt unterschiedlich interpretiert werden. Von vielen der hier vertretenen Tätowierer werden zudem auch Kunstwerke wie etwa Bilder und Kohlezeichnungen gezeigt, wenngleich auch die Tätowierungen selbst als Kunstwerke betrachtet werden sollten.
